Follow that sensation…

When an uncomfortable experience arises, what do you do?

We’ve been taught, perhaps even trained, that an uncomfortable sensation or experience is something to “get rid of”. That there’s something “wrong” with us if we have discomfort arise.

Our nervous system naturally heightens our awareness to harmful sensations. “Take your hand off the hot stove!” It’s built to keep us safe.

It’s there for us to turn our attention toward the situation, to respond in a way that’s needed.

But when it’s a sensation that we don’t “understand”, like a hot stove, but more like tension in our back or shoulders, stirring in our belly, or something else, what do we do?

Often we judge it, we say, “I wish this would just go away”. We try to change it, fix it, or avoid it and just push through.

When in reality, your body is trying to tell you something about your experience.

Every sensation is a message from your nervous system in a language that you can learn.

In yoga, I teach participants to explore the sensations of their body, “to get to know” their body. I invite us on a path of compassionate curiosity and non-judgment.

Non-judgment is key, because the moment we judge the sensations, we create a narrative and emotional response about the experience.

If we can stay curious and open, we can learn to meet the sensations with more understanding and compassion.

Your body is not trying to work against you, it’s trying to work for you.

By learning to turn towards the sensations, to hold space and get curious, we can begin to unravel what it’s truly trying to tell you.

In coaching, I help clients learn to turn their attention towards the sensations, with compassionate curiosity, which then reveals insights of what’s happening and what’s actually needed.

When we learn to find safety and curiosity in the wisdom of the body, we create a deeper connection with ourselves, which honours our needs and supports our growth.

It’s time to start turning towards the sensations. Are you ready?
